In the diesel engine, glow plugs pre-heat the engine block for easier starting when the engine is cold, especially in cold ambient temperatures. When you turn the key, the glow plugs are activated to warm the combustion chamber until the temperature inside it is enough for self-combustion of the diesel fuel introduced to the hot compressed air. Once the engine is warmed up, there's no need for the glow plugs and the system turns them off. The function of a glow plug relay is to switch the glow plugs on until they are hot enough to allow the engine to start and switch off power when they're no longer needed.
