Semi Truck Lug Nuts & Locks

Semi Truck Lug Nuts & Locks

Lug nuts, also called wheel nuts, are specially designed fasteners that attach wheels to large motor vehicles. Typically, lug nuts with rounded, conical, or tapered ends are used to fasten steel semi truck wheels to the wheel hubs or axles through threaded wheel studs. Wheel bolts with washers can be used for securing aluminum alloy wheels instead of wheel lug nuts and wheel studs. When you remove lug nuts, studs remain in the axle. The use of lug nuts and wheel studs has an advantage over wheel bolts in terms of ease of tire change.

You can simply lift the wheel and place it on the studs while securing it with wheel nuts. In case of fastening with wheel bolts, you have to hold the wheel while aligning it with the holes to put the bolts in. Some models of semi trucks have special pins that make this alignment much easier. The wheel can rest on these pins while you are inserting bolts. The tightening of lug nuts and bolts must be made in a criss-cross pattern. The use of impact wrench is not recommended due to the risk of over-tightening. Check your owner’s manual for recommended lug nut torque specifications.

It is highly recommended to check your newly installed lug nuts tightening after about 50 miles and re-torque them if needed. To make sure that all of your wheel nuts are tightened properly, you can use a set of loose wheel nut indicators. They are designed as pointed tags made of bright-colored plastic that can be fixed on your semi truck lug nuts. If the nut rotates, the tag rotates as well, noticeably shifting out of alignment with the other indicators. This simple but effective safety device allows you to tighten loose lug nuts or replace missing fasteners timely thus preventing the possible wheel detachment from the wheel studs.

Wheel nuts can get loose due to temperature changes, vibration, and surface corrosion. To prevent potential wheel loss, you can use affordable safety lug locks. They are made of durable plastic and are designed as prolonged plates with two splined holes. You can put safety lug locks on two neighboring lug nuts to create enough resistance between them to prevent them from rotating. If you want to protect your expensive tires and wheel rims from theft, consider installing nickel- or chrome-plated wheel locks that can be unscrewed only with a special key featuring the unique pattern. Also, there is a wide range of semi truck lug nut covers featuring flashy and exciting designs so that you can outfit your rig according to your taste.
