Chamois is the inner split of a sheepskin or alpine antelope 100% fish oil tanned. This is the industry standard asdescribed in Standard CS99 of The Sponge and Chamois Institute and for many years by the FTC. The Chamois is usedfor drying, for washing windows and mirrors and when dry for polishing surfaces to a high shine. Chamois’ unique qualities and characteristics vary significantly from other leathers. The inner split of the sheepskin, when100% fish oil tanned, is soft with a relatively open fiber structure that readily absorbs liquids and residual dirt particles andis able to easily release liquids and dirt for superior long-lasting use and repeat performance. Other leathers, such as goatskin, are dense and tough and will not perform in the same manner even when tanned. As a result, goat skin leathersare unable to release dirt particles, which become compacted in the skin interfering with performance. Chamois’ distinctive yellow lustrous color is created during the fish oil tanning process. In order to duplicate that color innon-Chamois leathers, such as goat or pig skin, dyes are frequently used. Dyes may be released on the vehicle or material on which it is used. Dyes are not used with Chamois. S.M.
