The engine belts, belt tensioners and idlers work together to drive such components as the power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, water pump, and alternator. The belt winds its way around these various components and propels them when the engine is running. While older vehicles used separate V-belts for each component, newer vehicles use a single serpentine belt to drive them all. Over time, any belt wears and tears, and excessive slippage or complete failure could mean serious damage to the engine or its systems. When it comes to replacement of your old serpentine belt, it is recommended that you also replace idlers and tensioners along with it to prevent uneven wear and the risk of failure down the road.
